Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

 The Court has established a pilot project which allows for the electronic filing of new civil cases.  Beginning October 7, 2013, attorneys may open new civil cases in the CM/ECF System and file both new and amended complaints electronically in the following kinds of cases only:

• student loan cases (filed pursuant to 20 U.S.C. § 1080, et seq.);
• patent, trademark, and copyright cases; and
• Employee Retirement Income Security Act (“ERISA”) cases (filed pursuant to 29 U.S.C. § 1001, et seq.).

For more detailed information about the Attorney Case-Opening Pilot Project,  refer to the Court’s Amended General Order No. 13-01.  For instructions on filing new civil cases electronically, refer to the Attorney Case-Opening Pilot Project User Manual.  Both documents are available on the Court’s website at www.cacd.uscourts.gov/e-filing/civil-case-opening, as are step-by-step training videos demonstrating the electronic case-opening process.

The Pilot Project shall be in effect from October 7, 2013, to December 1, 2014.  The Court anticipates that the electronic filing of case-initiating documents will eventually become mandatory in the Central District of California.
