Seeking Applications: Non-Attorney Merit Selection Panel Members

The United States District Court, Central District of California, is currently accepting applications from non-attorney individuals interested in serving on the Central District’s Merit Selection Panel.

OVERVIEW
The Merit Selection Panel’s function is to: (1) evaluate and recommend to the District Judges the best qualified applicants for appointment to the position of United States Magistrate Judge; and (2) evaluate and recommend to the District Judges whether an incumbent Magistrate Judge whose term is expiring should be reappointed to a new term of office.

Merit Selection Panel members serve three-year terms and may be eligible for one subsequent term. Merit Selection Panel members serve the Court in a voluntary capacity.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A general understanding of the federal court system and the role a magistrate judge plays in the Central District of California;
  • The ability to think analytically;
  • The ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment;
  • Possess strong oral, writing and interpersonal skills;
  • Live within the jurisdiction of the U.S. District Court, Central District of California (including: Los Angeles County, Orange County, Riverside County, Santa Barbara County, San Bernardino County, San Luis Obispo County, Ventura County).

  • A cover letter including why you wish to serve on the Merit Selection Panel, what you can contribute that makes you a good candidate for appointment and a how you satisfy the qualification standards listed above;
  • A resume or curriculum vitae;
  • A description of your qualifications for this position; and
  • Three references.
