The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a wide-ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. The ADA does not apply to the federal judiciary. However, pursuant to Judicial Conference policy, federal courts provide reasonable accommodations to persons with communications disabilities.

Parking

• No public parking is available at any district court facility. This includes handicapped parking spaces.
  A list of handicapped parking spaces available to the public, placed in order of proximity to the 4th Street entrance is as follows:

Building Accommodations

• The main building entry facing 4th street is wheel chair accessible.
• All individuals seeking entrance to the facility must present a valid, government issued, ID such as a drivers license or state ID and pass through security screening which in most circumstances includes a metal detector. However individuals with pacemakers or cochlear implants may request screening via a hand held wand upon presenting the Court Security Officers with a letter which identifies the condition from the doctor who performed the implant.
• All public restrooms are handicapped accessible.
• A public telephone device for the deaf (TTY) is available. It is located on the second floor immediately inside the United States Bankruptcy Court, Clerk’s Office.
• Smoke detectors and fire alarm systems are equipped with strobe lights.
• Elevator cabs are equipped with braille signage and emergency call features to accommodate those with seeing and hearing impairment.

Courtroom Accommodations

• All courtrooms are fully accessible for those with mobility issues.
• Courtrooms are equipped with infrared transmission for those with hearing disabilities. Headsets are available upon request from the courtroom deputy. Anyone anticipating the need to use hearing assisted devices is requested to notify the Courtroom Deputy within 48 hours prior to the scheduled hearing.
• A Light Writer speech generating device is available for use in the courtroom for those with speech disabilities. It may be requested from the courtroom deputy. Please provide at least 24 hours advance notice for the Light Writer speech generating device. If a printed transcript of a court hearing is required, please make arrangements to purchase one from the court reporter.
• Participants in need of Sign Language interpreters or CART reporters (Communication Access Realtime Translation) should contact the courtroom deputy handling the case, who will communicate the request to the interpreter services department. Please provide at least 48 hours advance notice for these services. Sign Language interpreters and CART reporters are provided to facilitate the deaf or hearing impaired individual's participation in court proceedings, and are not permitted to accompany the participant at other times.

Clerk’s Office Accommodations

• A Light Writer, speech generating device, is available is available upon request at any intake, pro se or records window.
• Magnified computer screens are available in the records and intake departments to view docket information on line for those with visibility impairments. A magnification device is also available at the intake and records departments to facilitate reading smaller print on court forms. You may also request that copies of documents be made at an enlarged size when ordering copies.
