Recording, copying, photographing and rebroadcasting of court proceedings is prohibited by federal law. A violation of this prohibition may result in sanctions, including suspension of your license to practice before this court, referral to the state bar, denial of the right to appear by video or telephonically at future proceedings, criminal prosecution, contempt, denial of admission to future hearings, and any other sanctions deemed necessary by the Court.
Law and Motion Schedule:
Civil matters are heard on Mondays at 9:00 a.m.
Criminal matters are heard on Mondays at 2:00 p.m.
(If Monday is a holiday, the next motion date is the following Monday.)
It is not necessary to clear a motion date with the court clerk prior to filing the motion.
Judge's Procedures:
- Discovery motions are to be calendared before the Magistrate Judge.
- Tentative rulings are not issued.
- Ex parte applications are considered on the papers and are not usually set for hearing. Counsel's attention is directed to Local Rule 7-19. If counsel do not intend to oppose the ex parte application, counsel must inform the Courtroom Deputy Clerk by telephone. Any opposition to an ex parte application should be filed within 24 hours of receipt of the ex parte application.
- Continuances and special requests must be approved by the Court, and will be granted only upon a showing of good cause. Counsel must make such requests in pleading form by submitting a stipulation and a proposed order to the clerk's office at least one week in advance. Refer to Local Rules 7-1 and 7-11 for proper format.
- Unless requested to do so, counsel shall not attempt to contact the Court or its staff by telephone or by any other ex parte means. All inquiries are to be made directly through the Courtroom Deputy Clerk.
- Counsel shall not contact court personnel to inquire about the status of a motion, stipulation or proposed order.
- If there is a calendar conflict, counsel are to notify the court clerk prior to the date of the conflict.
- Counsel are to request permission through the Courtroom Deputy Clerk before bringing or using any audio, video or electronic equipment in the courtroom.
- For general information on how to order a transcript of any reported or digitally recorded proceeding, please contact 213-894-3015 or visit the court's website (www.cacd.uscourts.gov) section referring to Court Reporter/Recorder Transcripts. If you require an estimate of cost for the preparation of a transcript, contact the court reporter/recorder for the desired proceeding.
To determine the court reporter/recorder for a particular proceeding, go to the Court Reporter Schedule web page and click on View by Date. Once you've determined the correct court reporter/recorder for the desired session, click on Court Reporter Phone and Email list for contact information. - Questions regarding law clerk/extern positions should be directed to chambers at [email protected].
- Counsel in civil cases are to obtain the services of an interpreter, if one is needed.
- Telephonic / Zoom Appearances: If you would like to appear by phone or by zoom you may file a request with a proposed order for the court's consideration. (Note that the court is now conducting all matters in-person)
