In 2016, the District Court will move out of the Los Angeles federal courthouse to join, in part, existing court offices in the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building and Courthouse. The remaining court offices will move to a new, sustainable courthouse currently being constructed on the corner of Broadway and First Street. The 600,000 square-foot facility will hold 24 courtrooms and 32 judicial chambers. It will feature improved security features that were not available in the current courthouse due to its designation as a Historic Place, and will better meet the needs of the U.S. Marshals Service. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new courthouse was held on August 8, 2013, and construction is expected to be completed sometime in 2016.
