Expiration of Authorizations under the CARES Act

The United States District Court for the Central District of California announces that the authorizations for the use of video and telephone conferencing for certain criminal proceedings under the CARES Act as set forth in Orders of the Chief Judge 20-043 and 22-157 will expire on September 25, 2022.  Therefore, the Court announces the following regarding its operations starting on September 26, 2022.

Court Hearings

  • The use of video or telephone conferencing under the CARES Act will no longer be authorized. Effective immediately, the Court will no longer accept scheduling requests for interviews, meetings or criminal hearings scheduled after 5:00 p.m. on September 23, 2022.
  • Judges may conduct court hearings in civil cases by video or telephone conference. Parties should refer to the Judges’ Procedures and Schedule page on the Court’s website.

Criminal Duty

  • In the Western Division, criminal duty matters will be held in Courtroom 880 at the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building and Courthouse.
  • The Southern and Eastern division criminal duty matters will be held in the duty magistrate judge’s courtroom.
