Passing of the Honorable George P. Schiavelli

Chief Judge Virginia A. Phillips announces the passing of former District Judge George P. Schiavelli, who died on August 28, 2019.  Judge Schiavelli was 71 years old.

Judge Schiavelli received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970 from Stanford University and his Juris Doctorate degree in 1974 from UCLA School of Law.  Following law school, he worked in private practice at O’Melveny & Meyers LLP, Ervin Cohen & Jessup LLP, and then at Horvitz & Levy LLP. 

In 1994, he was appointed by Governor Wilson to serve as a judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court.  He served in that capacity until 2000, after which he returned to private practice.

On January 20, 2004, President George W. Bush nominated Judge Schiavelli to be a United States District Judge for the Central District of California.  He was confirmed by the Senate on June 24, 2004 and received his commission on July 8, 2004. 

Judge Schiavelli resigned from the bench on October 5, 2008 and returned to private practice. 

Upon learning of Judge Schiavelli’s death, Chief Judge Phillips said the following:  “Judge Schiavelli was a warm and gracious colleague, known for his sharp intellect, breadth of experience, and quick wit.  We extend our sympathy to his wife Holli and his children Peter and Olivia.” 

In honor of Judge Schiavelli, the flags outside the courthouses of the United States District Court for the Central District of California will be flown at half-mast.
