Passing of The Honorable Alicemarie Huber Stotler

Chief Judge George H. King announced the passing of Senior District Judge and Chief Judge Emerita Alicemarie Huber Stotler on Monday, June 9, 2014. Judge Stotler was born May 29, 1942 in Alhambra, California.
    
Judge Stotler received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southern California (U.S.C.) in 1964 and her Juris Doctor degree from U.S.C. Gould School of Law in 1967. She was the first woman to hold a full-time position as an  Orange County Deputy District Attorney. She also worked in private practice with her husband, the Honorable James Allen Stotler of the Orange County Superior Court. Judge Stotler was appointed to the Orange County Municipal Court in 1976 where she served until her appointment to the Orange County Superior Court in 1978.

Judge Stotler was nominated as a United States District Judge for the Central District of California by President Ronald Reagan and received her commission on May 3, 1984.  She maintained her chambers in the Ronald Reagan Federal Building in Santa Ana.  She served on numerous national committees and chaired the National Rules Committee. Judge Stotler served as Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, from 2005-2009. She assumed senior status on January 5, 2009.
       
Upon learning of Judge Stotler’s death, Chief Judge George H. King said the following:

“Judge Stotler was one of the most influential judges who served on our Court.  As chair of the United States Judicial Conference’s Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure for five years, Judge Stotler’s work literally impacted how every federal lawyer practiced law, and how every federal judge presided over each case.  She was a dear friend and colleague who was unfailingly kind and thoughtful, and who carried herself with grace, dignity, elegance and decorum.  The Court and the judiciary could not have had a better ambassador.  We will all miss her very much.”

The U. S. District Court will convene a special session in the near future to celebrate the extraordinary life and contributions of Judge Stotler.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Alicemarie Huber Stotler Scholarship Fund at the U.S.C. Gould School of Law or to a cancer research facility of the donor’s choice.

In honor of Judge Stotler, the flags outside the courthouses of the United States District Court for the Central District of California will be flown at half mast.
